The global AI debate is taking a curious toll on investors here. Giants like Tesla and Nvidia publicly clash on slowing development versus keeping innovation free, while Meta sits somewhere in between. For South Africa, this spurs two key considerations. First, an accelerated AI rush or sudden regulatory clampdown overseas could feed volatility into USD/ZAR. A tech selloff in the US tends to pressure our rand given its sensitivity to risk. Second, local giants with exposure to global tech trends—Naspers and Prosus—might face bumps. Naspers especially, tied to international platforms, could see headline-driven swings even if not directly impacted by new AI rules. Given the unresolved nature of AI oversight and possible IPO delays for companies like OpenAI, expect more uncertainty. That said, a strong rand might mitigate some overseas turbulence.
