Axe Cap view

Nvidia's CoreWeave Exposure Won't Sink Its Ship

CoreWeave’s soaring debt yields spook lenders, but Nvidia’s profit engine remains solid.

CoreWeave’s bond yields hitting 14.5% tell a clear story — its debt load and losses are spooking the market. That kind of financial strain might scare off lenders, and rightly so given $35.6 billion in debt and operational losses. But Nvidia’s deep pockets and profit machine make this a manageable risk. With operating income north of $63 billion last quarter, Nvidia can hardly be rattled by a subsidiary that accounts for less than 8% of its revenue. For South Africans, this underscores why USD/ZAR remains the more direct touchpoint. Rising US tech strength usually supports a stronger dollar, which in turn pressures the rand. If Nvidia falters, the ripple would show up here through dollar strength and potentially hurt local importers or dollar-linked sectors like MTN and Shoprite. However, a sudden tech market correction or unexpected CoreWeave fallout could still rattle Nvidia and, by extension, put pressure on USD/ZAR. this is just our opinion and not financial advice

How I would invest

Buy Nvidia for its resilience and dominant AI position but keep an eye on USD/ZAR as a proxy for tech sector risk. Avoid CoreWeave debt given its spiking yields and losses.

What I would watch
  • NVDA
  • USD/ZAR
What could go wrong
  • Unexpected CoreWeave default negatively impacting Nvidia
  • US tech sector correction triggering USD strength and rand weakness
How strongly I feel

6/10

CoreWeave's bond yields surged to a record 14.5%, signaling lender concerns about the AI cloud company's heavy debt burden and operating losses. Despite CoreWeave's revenue doubling, the company loses money operationally and carries $35.6 billion in debt. While Nvidia has significant exposure to CoreWeave through a $4.7 billion equity stake and a $6.3 billion capacity deal, the analyst argues Nvidia can absorb any CoreWeave problems given its massive operating income of $63.7 billion last quarter and recommends buying Nvidia stock.
