Bond Market Sell-Off: 1 ETF I'm Loading Up on Right Now
Axe Cap view
Why I’m Buying Bonds Despite the Sell-Off
Rising global bond yields have scared many, but a disciplined bond ETF could make sense for South African investors.
Bond yields have jumped more than 1% in the US over the past year, pushing prices down and tempting investors to flee. Yet, this sell-off has created one of the better entry points I’ve seen in years. The Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF (BND) offers exposure to over 11,000 US bonds with yields north of 5%, well above South Africa’s local options. While local bonds like those from government or some banks still feel vulnerable to rand volatility and inflation risks, locking in high US bond yields via an accessible ETF like BND can act as a hedge if the rand weakens further or global growth slows. South Africans should watch USD/ZAR closely: a weaker rand would boost returns when converting back. I’m loading up because I expect the market to calm, stabilizing yields and allowing prices to recover. But if inflation or US rates surprise to the upside, this view may break down. this is just our opinion and not financial advice
Buy BND for diversified bond exposure and yield capture while monitoring USD/ZAR shifts. Trim local bond holdings that are highly sensitive to inflation or rand weakness.
- BND
- USD/ZAR
- US inflation running hotter than expected
- Rand weakness eroding local bond returns
6/10
Amid a global bond market sell-off with yields spiking 1% or more over the past year, the author advocates for a contrarian 'buy the dip' strategy on bonds. The Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF (BND) is recommended as an accessible way for individual investors to gain diversified exposure to 11,421 bonds across the U.S. market, currently offering yields around 5.14-5.5%. While BND experienced a -1.85% return over the past year due to rising interest rates, the author believes bond yields may stabilize and that locking in current yields presents upside potential.
