Elon Musk Promised "a Million Robotaxis" by 2020. None Materialized, and a Dedicated Robotaxi Fleet Isn't Expected Until at Least 2027. Here's What That Track Record Means for Tesla's Valuation.

Tesla’s Robotaxi Dream Falls Short, Keeping Valuation Risky

Tesla’s autonomous vehicle ambitions have missed the mark, casting doubts on its lofty valuation.

Elon Musk’s promise of a million Tesla robotaxis by 2020 was always ambitious, but six years on, fewer than a thousand exist. Meanwhile, competitor Waymo quietly scaled to over 2,500 vehicles and half a million weekly rides, underscoring Tesla’s execution struggles. Despite this, Tesla trades on a stratospheric P/E of 351, still largely dependent on traditional car sales for over 70% of revenue. South African investors often watch global tech through the lens of Naspers and Prosus, but the robotaxi story doesn’t yet translate into a local catalyst. The rand’s reaction to US tech shocks, like USD/ZAR swings when Tesla stumbles, is more direct. Tesla’s hype risks making it a value trap. If autonomous vehicles take until 2027 or beyond to scale, patience – and caution – is warranted. That said, should breakthroughs accelerate, the market could dramatically reprice the stock. this is just our opinion and not financial advice

How I would invest

Avoid adding Tesla on current valuations due to missed milestones. Watch USD/ZAR for risk-off spikes during tech sell-offs. Consider Naspers or Prosus selectively but don’t chase robotaxi exposure here.

What I would watch
  • TSLA
  • USD/ZAR
  • Naspers
  • Prosus
What could go wrong
  • Faster-than-expected autonomous vehicle adoption
  • Global tech rebound
How strongly I feel

7/10

Elon Musk's 2019 promise of one million Tesla robotaxis by 2020 has failed to materialize, with only a few hundred vehicles currently operating as of mid-2026. Tesla's Robotaxi service lags significantly behind competitor Waymo, and the company's stock has declined 15% over the past year. With a high P/E ratio of 351 and over 70% of revenue still from vehicle sales rather than autonomous services, investors are increasingly skeptical of Tesla's ability to execute on its ambitious autonomous vehicle goals.
